Eco Cylinder and Combination Unit
Albion’s Eco cylinder is approved
for use with solar systems by BRE Clear Skies. Installation of
Albion Eco cylinders can now be grant assisted.
30% of the volume is dedicated solar capacity,
and 70% volume can be heated in the normal way via a primary
coil on days when solar input is not sufficient to heat the
full contents of the unit or on days when additional energy
is required.
Two control thermostats are used to maximise
solar gain. The upper one is a strap on type used for boiler
control (not supplied). The lower one is a probe type (F) for
solar control (not supplied). The upper 1/2” female boss
(G) is for a temperature gauge (not supplied).
The range shows twelve popular sizes and
capacities. When calculating the size required, please ensure
that the upper coil volume is used for total requirement. If
the application is for a twin bath, for example, at least 145
litre of ‘upper coil’ volume is required so that
this demand can be catered for on the darkest of winter days.
The Centurion range shown here has a Part
L compliant upper coil fitted - see over for the Superduty HE
version for even higher performance.
The eco-element coil can also be used
for geotherm or alternative fuel input. It is based on the award
winning Albion Superduty coil and can be relied upon to maximise
efficiencies.

THE
SUPERDUTY RANGE
Clear Skies Approval SC2083 |
|
The
Superduty Eco HE cylinder and combination unit
The Superduty Eco HE cylinder has been designed
to make the very best use of energy input, both solar and fossil fuel
top up.
Local Authorities, Housing Associations
and other energy conscious specifiers understand the importance of CHeSS
Best Practice and will probably be aware of the Albion Superduty unit.
Although the principle of operation
is the same as the Centurion shown overleaf, further energy savings are
achievable by coupling the traditional boiler input to the Superduty multicoil
heat exchanger. Efficiencies reduce boiler cycling and result in faster
heat up. with lower boiler return temperatures the unit is most suited
to operate with condensing boilers.
The result is that the units
can be downsized to meet hot water demand. So a 1500 x 450 conventional
system overleaf could be substituted by a 1050 x 400 Superduty HE solar
unit and achieve a similar result.

USING
ALBION HOT WATER PRODUCTS WITH
AGA-RAYBURN AND SOLID FUEL APPLIANCES |
|
| |
|
| INTRODUCTION |
|
| Albion's
range of hot water cylinders is extensive. The latest developments in
mains pressure systems have met a growing demand for power-showering without
pumps and the elimination of the tank in the loft. With these newer products
has also come a need to accomodate more traditional heat sources such
as Aga and Rayburn cookers and solid fuel appliances.
Aga - Rayburn and Albion are
pleased to offer the trade guidance in the installation practice of the
product ranges offered by both companies.
Aga cookers offer continuous low-output heat which is excellent for water
heating provided the guidance is followed. Agas can be solid fuel, gas,
or oil appliances.
Rayburn applications tend to be fully pumped, well controlled heat sources
suitable for ater heating and central heating in place of conventional
gas or oil
boilers. Guidance is given on the use of these and their gravity fed counterparts.
Rayburns are gas or oil appliances.
Reference is also made to solid fuel appliances in this leaflet although
we
recommend that manufacturers of these appliances are consulted for further
technical advice. |
|
| CONVENTIONAL
OPEN VENTED CYLINDERS |
|
| Albion
Kitemarked cylinders can be used with all Aga and Rayburn appliances as
well as solid fuel appliances. The standard coil is designed to operate
on gravity
circuits as well as pumped ones. |
|
 |
|
| It
is important to control the flow temperature through the coil. Cylinders
must be
fitted with thermostats, strap-on or immesion type, and provision must
be made to divert the water from the appliance to a heat sink - usually
a bathroom radiator. Figure 1 shows a typical configuration. Overheating
may cause premature cylinder failure!
Aga and Rayburn gas cookers can be controlled in this way with the thermostat
controlling the on/off of the boiler and pump (if fitted). |
|
 |
|
| For
dual fuel systems e.g. using an Aga with a conventional gas fired wet
central heating system, the above must be observed for the solid fuel
circuit.
A second coil is fitted in the cylinder and is connected to the gas/oil
boiler in the usual way. The coils are 'nested' so that the full capacity
of the cylinder can be
heated. Please order as a twin coil for dual fuel use ( figure 2). Albion
or Aga
rayburn do not recommend the use of 'neutralisers'.
The recommended minimum cylinder size for all solid fuel appliances is
1200mm
x 450mm (48" x 18") with a loose fitted insulation jacket to
allow a long term
trickle charge as the output from an Aga cooker, for example, is 1kw.
Bigger
cylinders can be used, but the 1200 x 450 is suitabe for most domestic
use. |
|
| ALBION
SUPERDUTY |
|
| High
recovery cylinders such as an Albion Superduty do not work on gravity
systems and are not recommended. The output of a solid fuel Aga cooker
is not
sufficient to re-heat these units quickly enough to work effectively even
when
pumped. |
|
| MAINSFLOW
THERMAL STORE SYSTEMS |
|
| Albion
Mainsflow works on the thermal store principle where the stored water
in the cylinder is connected directly to the heat source and is maintained
at 75 degrees.
Through this store passes a heat exchanger connected to the cold mains.
Heat is passed from the store to the heat exchanger, providing a mains-fed
hot water
facility and eliminating storage in the loft.
Central heating is open-vented, and the store becomes part of the primary
circuit
enabling very fast heat up of the radiators. |
|
 |
|
| It
is usual to have a well controlled gas/oil boiler pumped circuit.
Rayburn pumped appliances can be used without any problem. Rayburn gravity
appliances can also be used but the heat recovery in the store will be
slower.
Aga cookers or solid fuel appliances can be used as a secondary heat source.
The recommended circuit layout is shown in figure 3. A second coil is
fitted for the gas /oil central heating boiler with the Aga/solid fuel
appliance fed directly to the store as a trickle charger. Two thermostats
are fitted to the store, one used in the normal mode to control the conventional
boiler, the second is connected to
ensure that the output from the Aga/solid fuel appliance can be diverted
once the
store reaches 75 degrees C. The usual method of a heat sink is employed.
It is important to specify the above when ordering Albion Mainsflow for
solid fuel
applications.
It is possible to use an Aga/solid fuel appliance with a thermal store
as the primary heat source. The use of such a system would be for domestic
hot water only. Output is not sufficient for a central heating facility.
Again, a heat sink is needed (see figure 4). These can be ordered as standard
Albion Mainsflow. |
|
 |
|
| |
|
|
NOTE:
STAINLESS UNVENTED SYSTEMS |
|
It
is illegal under current Building Regulations to use solid fuel appliances
with unvented equipment.
FOR SAFE MAINS PRESSURE HOT WATER SYSTEMS
USE MAINSFLOW THERMAL STORE. |
